How much heating BTUs do I need for my outdoor heater?

To know how many BTUs you’ll need to heat a space, multiply the square footage by 20.

Eg. For a 50 x 15 square feet space

55 x 15 x 20 = 16,500 BTUs

This calculation is valid for both propane and natural gas heaters.

Do patio heaters work when its freezing?

In many instances, no. Most patio and outdoor heaters cannot operate below 48 degrees Fahrenheit weather.

How long will a propane tank heater last with a fire pit or free-standing patio heater?

On high, usually the heater would last for about 8-10 hours at the maximum BTUs. It's important to note that a 20 lbs. propane tank has roughly 433,000 BTUs when full, so dividing that by the maximum BTUs of your heater would determine how long your heater can last at the maximum BTUs.

Should I get a professional to install my patio heater?

We always recommend getting a licensed professional to install your heaters! While we offer "no assembly" heater options such as tabletop heaters, it's always best to seek help from a professional when installing heaters.

How do I know which size heater is right for my space?

Choosing the best size patio heater depends on your space and the needs for the heater. Smaller patio heaters (tabletops, campfire pits and firewood heaters) are great for small spaces and for warming up smaller areas where everyone is standing in close proximity. Medium-sized patio (small fire pits and fire tables) heaters would be perfect for larger spaces and for keeping everyone comfortable while they’re in different areas. Large patio heaters (standing and glass tube heaters) can be used to keep everyone comfortable even if they’re sitting away from a collective space.

Can I use my patio heater in a encloses space like indoors or a room?

Only electric patio heaters can be used indoors or in an enclosed area. Gas/fuel-based heaters such never be used indoor or in an enclose space.

How many square feet does a patio heater cover?

On average, outdoor heaters can heat an area of roughly 100-200 square feet depending on their BTU output.

What are the typical BTUs for small, medium and large patio heaters?

  • Small: 1,000 - 10,2000 BTUs

  • Medium: 10,000 - 20,000 BTUs

  • Large: 20,000 BTUs and more

Are electric heaters more expensive than fuel-operated heaters?

Typically no, but there are some models of electric heaters that may cost more than some models of fuel-operated heaters. This highly depends on their heat coverage and BTUs/Watts.
